Who is Mala Gaonkar? She quit her job and earned Rs 54,000 crore in 3 years, Know details: It’s hard to believe, but a woman has earned over 54,000 crore rupees in just three years by trading in the stock market. Mala Gaonkar’s hedge fund tripled its assets to approximately $6 billion in just three years of trading, making it one of the fastest-growing hedge funds in stock market history.

Mala Gaonkar’s company, SurgoCap Partners, launched in January 2023 with $1.8 billion and has established itself as one of the most successful female traders in this male-dominated industry.

Who is Mala Gaonkar?
Mala Gaonkar is an American businesswoman and investor. Born in the US, Mala Gaonkar grew up in Bengaluru, India, and has a long history of working in the stock market. Mala worked at Steve Mandel’s Lone Pine for over 20 years and eventually became one of the three portfolio managers overseeing the firm’s assets. However, she left the firm in 2022. Following this, Mala Gaonkar founded SurgiCap Partners in 2023, an investment firm.

How did she make money from the stock market?
After leaving her job, 56-year-old Mala Gaonkar launched a hedge fund in 2023. Notably, this hedge fund, launched in 2023, was the largest hedge fund ever managed by a woman. Mala Gaonkar invested using data science and allocated funds across various sectors. SurgiCap’s assets are now comparable to Bobby Jain’s fund, which launched in 2024 with $5.3 billion, and Diego Megia’s $7 billion firm, which also launched that same year.

Few startup hedge funds have grown so rapidly in recent years, partly due to US pension and endowment funds pulling back cash tied up in private equity.
