Toll Tax Overhaul: Up to 70% Discount Rolled Out on Select Highways
Toll tax rules: A massive discount of up to 70% announced on these highways: The government has announced big relief for people traveling on national highways. Many commuters complained that full toll tax was charged even during road construction, despite traffic jams and inconvenience. Taking this into account, the central government has changed the toll tax rules.
Under the new rules, if a two-lane national highway is being widened to four lanes or more, motorists will pay only 30% toll during construction, getting a 70% discount. This rule has come into effect from the new year and applies to both new and ongoing projects.
If a four-lane highway is being expanded to six or eight lanes, commuters will get a 25% discount and pay only 75% of the toll during construction.
Around 25,000–30,000 km of highways will be upgraded across the country with an investment of about ₹10 lakh crore. These changes will significantly reduce the financial burden on commuters during road construction.
