PAN- Aadhaar link Deadline 31st December 2025
The government has set the deadline for linking PAN and Aadhaar cards as December 31, 2025. If a person fails to link the two documents by this date, their PAN card will become inoperative. This means that the person will not be able to file income tax returns, and all their tax-related work will be halted.
A PAN is a 10-digit alphanumeric number issued by the Income Tax Department. This number is used to track all financial and tax-related transactions of an individual. Therefore, a PAN that is inoperative can cause significant problems.
The CBDT has clarified that anyone who obtained an Aadhaar card before October 1, 2025, must link their Aadhaar-PAN by December 31, 2025. Failure to do so will result in the Income Tax Department suspending all services.
You will not be able to file income tax returns with an inactive PAN. None of your pending returns will be processed. Refunds will not be issued, regardless of the amount. Any defective returns currently in processing will also be stopped. TDS/TCS will be deducted at a higher rate because your PAN will not be considered valid. Therefore, the government is repeatedly advising people to link their PANs in a timely manner.
