Deadline Over, Refund Still Possible: What Taxpayers Should Know

ITR Filing Deadline: Even though the deadline to file revised or belated income tax returns for FY 2024-25 (AY 2025-26) ended on December 31, 2025, taxpayers still have one last remedy to correct mistakes. If the return has already been processed under Section 143(1) and an intimation highlighting errors has been received, a rectification request under Section 154 can be filed.

Rectification is permitted only for apparent errors on record, such as arithmetical mistakes, incorrect calculation of tax or interest, mismatch in TDS credit, or clerical errors. As explained by chartered accountant Suresh Surana, this online process can help taxpayers correct such errors and may lead to a refund or an increase in an existing refund.

What is the easiest way to check the refund status?
While waiting for a refund, it’s crucial to track its status. You can check the refund status by visiting the Income Tax e-filing portal. After logging in, select the refund status option and enter your PAN and assessment year. If the refund is being processed, you will receive a message such as ‘Refund Issued’ or ‘Processing Underway’. If there is a delay, wait for the intimation, which will be sent via email or displayed on the portal.
