Live within 20km of a Toll Plaza? No Toll Tax Needed

NHAI Rule: No Toll For Locals Living Within a 20km Radius

NHAI Rule: If you travel every day to work, market, or school using the highway, and a toll plaza is near your home, here’s something helpful. If you live within 20km of a toll plaza, you can get a special monthly pass for just around ₹300-350. This lets you cross that toll plaza unlimited times without paying each time. It’s an NHAI rule to save money for residents. Just apply at the toll plaza with your address proof and vehicle documents!

What is the 20-kilometer rule? According to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), vehicle owners whose homes are located within a 20-kilometer radius of any toll plaza can travel toll-free. To avail of this benefit, the vehicle owner simply needs to provide a government-issued document proving their address, such as an Aadhaar card, electricity bill, ration card, or any other address proof.

You have to go to the nearest toll plaza and show your address proof. After verification, you will be given a special local pass, which exempts you from paying toll charges for daily commutes.

Part of the Pay As You Use policy: This feature is being offered under the GNSS-based Pay As You Use system. This policy has been implemented on a pilot basis on several highways since September 2024.
