Aadhaar card updating is free, fees waived for 1 year.
Now there is no fee for updating the biometric details of the Aadhaar card. Updating biometric details has become completely free for 1 year. UIDAI has taken this big decision to encourage people to update their biometric details. However, not everyone will get the benefit of this decision of UIDAI. UIDAI has waived the fee for updating the biometric details in Aadhaar only for children between the ages of 5 and 15 years.
In addition to waiving all fees for mandatory biometric update (MBU) in Aadhaar for children, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will also use behavioral insights to encourage MBU adoption. UIDAI has partnered with research consultancy Behavioural Insights Limited (BIT) to help children and youth access critical services through the timely update of their biometrics in Aadhaar.
The partnership aims to increase biometric update in Aadhaar for children between 5 and 15 years of age and address behavioral, logistical, and awareness barriers to ensure timely update, thereby enabling seamless access to Aadhaar-linked services and benefits.
After enrolment in Aadhaar, the child will be required to update key biometric details such as fingerprint, iris, and photo upon completion of 5 years of age and again upon completion of 15 years of age. UIDAI is continuously making efforts to increase the adoption of mandatory biometric update among the target groups.
As a public-friendly measure, UIDAI has waived all MBU fees for the age group of 7-15 years, which is expected to benefit approximately 6 crore children. The waiver of mandatory biometric update fees for children aged 5 years and 15 years has come into effect from October 1, 2025, and will remain in effect for a period of one year, i.e., till September 30, 2026.
