IndiGo Fined ₹22 Crore After Mass Flight Disruptions in December
DGCA Slaps ₹22 Crore Penalty on IndiGo Over December Flight Cancellations: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Saturday fined IndiGo ₹22.2 crore for large-scale flight cancellations and delays in December. The regulator also directed the airline to remove Jason Herter, Senior Vice President of the Operations Control Centre, from his operational role for failing to properly plan and implement revised pilot duty and rest rules.
The DGCA issued warnings to IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers and COO Isidre Porqueras for lapses in oversight. IndiGo cancelled over 5,000 flights between December 2 and 10 and operated hundreds more with long delays, causing hardship to millions of passengers.
The DGCA said it imposed a penalty of ₹3 lakh per day for 68 days, along with an additional fine of ₹1.8 crore, taking the total penalty to ₹22.2 crore. The action followed a review that found serious operational failures.
The regulator said IndiGo failed to comply with the new Flight Duty Time Limitation (FDTL) rules despite clear deadlines and repeated warnings. Earlier, the DGCA had also ordered a 10% cut in IndiGo’s flight operations for non-compliance.
