Markets Snap Higher at Close as Sensex Jumps 319, Nifty Gains 127
A Strong Finish: Sensex jumped 319 points and the Nifty 127 points: The domestic stock market ended on a positive note on Tuesday after a strong rally in the final minutes of trade. The BSE Sensex rose 319.78 points, or 0.39 percent, to close at 81,857.48, while the NSE Nifty 50 gained 126.75 points, or 0.51 percent, to settle at 25,175.40.
Markets remained volatile for most of the session, moving between gains and losses. However, heavy buying just before the closing bell pushed the indices sharply higher. During this late surge, the Sensex briefly jumped by more than 500 points to touch an intraday high of 82,084.92.
Sentiment was also supported by the announcement of a historic Free Trade Agreement between India and the European Union, which is expected to come into effect next year.
Out of the 30 Sensex stocks, 17 closed in the green while 13 ended lower. In the Nifty 50, 34 stocks advanced and 16 declined. Adani Ports was the top gainer on the Sensex, rising 4.47 percent, while Mahindra & Mahindra was the biggest loser, falling 4.19 percent.
Other major gainers included Axis Bank, Tata Steel, Tech Mahindra, NTPC, SBI, UltraTech Cement, ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, Infosys, and L&T.
