Scholarship for SC Students, Now the Government will give them 2 lakh per year
The Central Government has taken a major step to make higher education accessible to Scheduled Caste (SC) students by providing them with a scholarship of ₹2 lakh. The Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has issued new guidelines for the “Higher Level Scholarship Scheme for Scheduled Caste Students” for the academic year 2024-25.
According to this, SC students will now receive financial assistance of up to ₹2 lakh per year from the government for higher education. This assistance will cover tuition fees and non-refundable charges.
Scholarships to be Transferred Through DBT: To ensure that scholarships reach students directly, the Ministry has directed that scholarship payments be made directly to students’ bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). The government has comprehensively amended the “Higher Level Scholarship Scheme” and implemented several significant changes from the academic year 2024-25. Under the new system, students will also be provided with an additional educational allowance. This amount of Rs 86,000 in the first year and Rs 41,000 in the subsequent years can be used for accommodation, books, laptop and other necessary expenses.
The government has approved 4,400 new scholarships for the year 2024-25. Overall, 21,500 scholarships are scheduled to be allocated under the scheme from 2021-22 to 2025-26, of which 30% will be reserved exclusively for girl students.
An important provision is that only two children from a family will be eligible for this scholarship. If a student changes institutions after selection, their eligibility will automatically expire.
Transparency and accountability are prioritized in the scheme guidelines. Any violations may result in the student being removed from the scheme. However, students already selected will continue to receive benefits until they complete their courses.
