20 new waterways will be launched between these cities
The Finance Minister announced 20 new waterways in the country: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the launch of 20 new waterways in the country in the Union Budget. One of the key projects is a new freight corridor from Dankuni in the east to Surat in the west, aimed at promoting eco-friendly cargo transport.
The government plans to make these 20 waterways operational over the next five years. The rollout will begin with National Waterway-5 in Odisha, which will link mineral-rich regions such as Talcher and Angul and industrial hubs like Kalinganagar with the ports of Paradip and Dhamra.
The Finance Minister also announced the development of a ship repair ecosystem in Varanasi and Patna to support inland waterway transport.
